Demon's Souls - Boss VFX Concepts - Flamelurker

From his fiery punches to the ember-filled air of his lair, Flamelurker was one of the tougher challenges for our team from both a technical and visual standpoint. Our concept and AD team spent a lot of time working in tandem with the VFX team to try to make our rendition of Flamelurker every bit as imposing as the original. We wanted to retain his level of fiery-output while trying to introduce just a bit of clarity to what is one of the most difficult encounters in the game, so we decided to wreath his head in flames like a mantle to accentuate his imposing silhouette, as well as leave his forearms and feet mostly devoid of flames to allow the player to read his attacks more clearly. We also tried to push the level of fidelity of the effects - adding lava-based damage states and really ramping up the environmental effects in the arena.
