Demon's Souls - Storm Beast Concepts

Redesigning the storm beasts was a bit of a challenge. With their large, simple, manta-ray silhouettes we were constantly fighting their tendency to look cartoonish. Ultimately, we tried to push them toward a more unsettling aesthetic, with storm-torn wings and emaciated, skeletal frames. In addressing their VFX, we leaned on the fact that they are creatures of the storm and went with a lightning-based effect as they launch their javelins from the skies.
