Demon's Souls - Boss VFX Concepts - Penetrator

Penetrator has always been a personal favorite boss of mine. With the redesign, I really wanted to solidify his unique identity as a counterpoint to the Tower Knight - both in the environment and in his effects. Tower Knight's blue effects resonated with the Blue-Eyed Knights of Boletaria, so I chose to interpret Penetrator as the Red-Eyed Knight's champion. With that in mind, I went with a red color for his sword effect, suggesting that it could relate to the act of slaying the Fat Official as you enter his arena. There is also some obvious yonic imagery present in the original design of the penetrator, his arena, and his function within the story of Demon's Souls, so I felt like adding some fallen rose petals to the arena would add another layer of thematic description to those who paid attention. In the end, we really tried to create an encounter that was rich in storytelling beyond the straightforward boss battle.
